Nelson Weekly

After conducting his own community poll (1,700 respondents), Nelson City

Councillor Mel Courtney is lodging a notice of motion to council, asking that

council officers review the route and design of the new Princes Drive extension

including the proposed traffic lights that intersect with Waimea Road.

The views of the Nelson community were not sought prior to the resource

consent being granted in February 2016 because the installation of traffic lights

on Waimea Road were considered “not to be of significance”.

COURTESY CROSSINGS - WITH A SMILE & A WAVE.

COURTESY CROSSINGS - WITH A SMILE & A WAVE.

Koen-Suze Schoutens, thank you for sharing with me your uncertainties regarding the raised pedestrian crossings in our smart little city – you are not alone with your concerns. Keon-Suze, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says these raised crossings are not officially pedestrian crossings, but courtesy crossings & pedestrians do not have the right of way. However drivers should be courteous to pedestrians using a courtesy crossing. It’s best for pedestrians & motorist to make eye contact with each other & whoever reaches the courtesy crossing first should be given the right of way, followed by a wave/smile.

WORLD SERIES MOUNTAIN BIKE EVENT COMING TO NELSON.
The Nelson Mountain Bike Club has booked the Botanics Reserve (base of Centre of NZ hill) from 5 - 10 February to host the Aorere Enduro World Series event.
They will create an 'event village' around the perimeter of the cricket block, consisting of a number of small marquees spaced in a way that allows visitors to interact with athletes and sponsors.
This is a high profile competitive mountain biking event that is likely to attract great interest from the international mountain biking community.
Public access to the Centre of New Zealand walking tracks will not be restricted.

Beach Mat

Michelle Ashby is this the idea you have been suggesting for our beach?
NEWS UPDATE
Mount Maunganui main beach access mat is back.

The bright blue beach access mat is back at Mount Maunganui beach for summer.
The portable, rollout mat provides a sturdy and a very visible path to the beach for people who generally cannot get on to the beach or move across the sand easily like those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or strollers.

It is the first council-owned access mat in New Zealand. Tauranga is working towards being a fully inclusive city, and this initiative supports their goal.

It’s available throughout the summer months, however, part or all of the mat is rolled up during extreme weather, such as a king tide.

There is a flag at the beginning of the access mat walkway – if the flag is out that means the mat is out and available for people to use.

The mat was trialled at Mount Maunganui’s main beach in December 2016. The matting was donated by Metro Marketing, Harbour City Lions and a private donor.
Ongoing support and maintenance is provided by Smart Environmental.

WHEELCHAIR SWING WORKING AGAIN VERY VERY SOON.

Michelle Ashby, thank you for bringing to my attention that the Wheelchair Swing at Tahuna Beach Playground is not working. You will be pleased to know NCC's contractor Nelmac has been asked to carryout the necessary repairs promptly. Michelle, you are correct the swing does look unloved, tired & uninviting at the moment but in the New Year (January) Nelmac will be asked to give it a spruce up.

NEWS - UPDATE.
5 NEW BUS SHELTERS WITH MORE TO COME.
Joanne Taylor thank you for your interest & questions regarding the new bus shelters you are seeing in many parts of our smart little city.
The bus shelters are paid for by NCC but in turn the council receives a 51% subsidy from Central Government via the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA). The shelters vary in cost - the new ones are costing approximately $15,000 each plus installation costs.
Advice on their location has come from the local bus company. However I feel sure council would value suggestions on where you think bus shelters would be well-used.

GOOD NEWS.
CAMPERVAN WASTE WATER - DUMP STATION.

Geoff Combes, thank you for sharing with me your view that there needs to be more than one (freely available) Dump Station (for grey & black water) in Nelson. You will be pleased know NCC is currently looking for possible sites near to the central city & will go back to the NZMCA (NZ Motor Caravan Association) with options for them to consider.
The NZMCA's over 80 thousand members are looking at part funding the project with hopefully some assistance from the Tourism Infrastructure Fund.
