Beach Mat

Michelle Ashby is this the idea you have been suggesting for our beach?
NEWS UPDATE
Mount Maunganui main beach access mat is back.

The bright blue beach access mat is back at Mount Maunganui beach for summer.
The portable, rollout mat provides a sturdy and a very visible path to the beach for people who generally cannot get on to the beach or move across the sand easily like those using wheelchairs, mobility scooters or strollers.

It is the first council-owned access mat in New Zealand. Tauranga is working towards being a fully inclusive city, and this initiative supports their goal.

It’s available throughout the summer months, however, part or all of the mat is rolled up during extreme weather, such as a king tide.

There is a flag at the beginning of the access mat walkway – if the flag is out that means the mat is out and available for people to use.

The mat was trialled at Mount Maunganui’s main beach in December 2016. The matting was donated by Metro Marketing, Harbour City Lions and a private donor.
Ongoing support and maintenance is provided by Smart Environmental.
