COURTESY CROSSINGS - WITH A SMILE & A WAVE.

Koen-Suze Schoutens, thank you for sharing with me your uncertainties regarding the raised pedestrian crossings in our smart little city – you are not alone with your concerns. Keon-Suze, the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) says these raised crossings are not officially pedestrian crossings, but courtesy crossings & pedestrians do not have the right of way. However drivers should be courteous to pedestrians using a courtesy crossing. It’s best for pedestrians & motorist to make eye contact with each other & whoever reaches the courtesy crossing first should be given the right of way, followed by a wave/smile.
